GoDaddy DNS alternative

A GoDaddy DNS Alternative for Records Someone Actually Watches

If your domain is registered at GoDaddy, its DNS probably lives there too. The standard editor handles A, CNAME, MX, and TXT records, and Premium DNS adds secondary DNS, managed DNSSEC, SOA editing, and room for 1,500 records per domain. Neither tier, as GoDaddy describes them, makes the change for you, copies the zone before an edit, or compares the records the next morning with what was set. That is the job we do.

With Cascadia you get

  • Changes within two business days
  • A zone copy before every change
  • Records checked every morning
  • 90 days of daily history
  • Domain can stay where it is
  • Your zone, your account

Where Cascadia Goes Further

GoDaddy says most DNS changes take effect within an hour and can take up to 48 hours to update everywhere. We care about the days after that: whether the record is still right tomorrow, and next month.

The Zone Copied Before Every Edit

Secondary DNS keeps a second name server answering. It is not a record of what the zone said before yesterday's change. Our copy is, and it goes back in seconds.

Changes Made by Us, Not a Delegate

GoDaddy lets you invite a delegate to manage DNS for you, which still means finding someone willing. Here the someone is us, and changes land within two business days.

Checked Every Morning

Registrar DNS gets edited by whoever holds the password, often in a hurry. Our daily comparison turns an unexplained change into a ticket naming what moved.

Ninety Days of Record History

What each record said on each day for 90 days, in your portal. Useful the moment someone asks what the MX records looked like before the email stopped.

Who This Comparison Is For

Convenience Is Real

Domain, DNS, and often email in one account, with the email records set up automatically when the mail is GoDaddy's own. For a single site that rarely changes, that is a reasonable arrangement.

Premium DNS Adds Genuine Features

Secondary DNS, managed DNSSEC with five more credits on top of the account's five, SOA editing, and 1,500 records per domain, applied to every domain in the account at once.

The Login Is the Weak Point

Registrar DNS tends to be edited by whoever has the account password, and rarely written down. When that person leaves, the record of why each entry exists usually leaves with them.

Choose GoDaddy DNS if

  • Your DNS rarely changes and one person looks after it
  • You want domain, DNS, and email in one account
  • You need secondary DNS or DNSSEC

Choose Cascadia if

  • Several people have edited the records over the years
  • You want a copy taken before every change
  • You want to hear about a change the next morning

Moving Your DNS from GoDaddy in Four Steps

The domain can stay registered at GoDaddy. Only the nameservers change, and only after every record has been copied and checked.

  1. 1

We Read the Zone as It Stands

Every record, what it points at, which belong to services you still use, and which are leftovers from a website or mail provider you left years ago.

  2. 2

We Rebuild It and Check Each Record

The zone goes up on the platform we run, in an account in your name, and every record is compared with the GoDaddy original before anything is switched.

  3. 3

    The Nameservers Change at GoDaddy

With the copy verified, the nameservers on the domain are changed. The old ones keep answering for anyone who cached them, so the move happens without downtime.

  4. 4

    Then It Goes Quiet

You ask for changes and they are made within two business days. Every morning the live records are compared with what we last set, and anything that moved becomes a ticket.

See Managed DNS

Still have a question?

What is a GoDaddy DNS alternative?

Anywhere else your zone can be hosted, or anyone else who can look after it. That covers dedicated DNS hosts such as DNSimple, ClouDNS, and Bunny DNS, cloud services such as Amazon Route 53 and Google Cloud DNS, and managed services like this one. Most people with GoDaddy DNS never chose it; it came with the domain. That is fine, and it is also why nobody tends to watch it.

How is Cascadia different from GoDaddy DNS?

GoDaddy gives you an editor for the records attached to your domain. We make the changes you ask for within two business days, copy the whole zone before each one, compare the live records every morning, and keep 90 days of history in your portal.

Is GoDaddy DNS cheaper?

Standard DNS comes with a GoDaddy domain, so on price alone it is hard to beat. Managed DNS is $15 a month per domain. What that buys is the work GoDaddy leaves with you: the edit itself, a copy of the zone before it, and a check every morning that the records still say what they should.

Do we have to move the domain away from GoDaddy?

No. The registration can stay exactly where it is. Only the nameservers change, so GoDaddy keeps the domain and we look after the zone. If you later want the registration handled too, that is Domain Management.

Isn't Premium DNS secondary DNS a backup?

It keeps a second name server answering if the first has trouble, which is useful. It is not a copy of what the zone said before a change. If an edit removes the wrong record, secondary DNS faithfully serves the mistake too. Our copy before every change is what lets us put the old record back in seconds.

What happens to email set up through GoDaddy?

If your mail is with GoDaddy, its records move across exactly as they are and keep working. We compare them with the originals before the nameservers change, because MX and SPF records are the ones that hurt most when they go wrong.

Can you move us off GoDaddy DNS without downtime?

Yes, when it is planned properly. Records are copied across and verified before the nameservers change, and the old servers keep answering for anyone who cached them. GoDaddy itself notes that DNS updates can take up to 48 hours to reach everywhere, which is why we never rush the switch.

Do we lose control of our DNS?

No. Leaving GoDaddy DNS does not mean handing the zone to us. It sits in an account in your name, every record is visible in your portal at any time, and you are asking us to do the work rather than giving up ownership.

What counts as a change we can ask for?

Anything in the zone. A records, CNAMEs, MX, TXT, and SRV, the verification record a new service asks for, a subdomain for a staging site. There is no per-change fee and no ticket allowance, so nobody has to ration requests.

Will you tell us when a record changes that we did not ask for?

Yes. Every morning the live records are compared with what we last set. A record edited by someone with the old login, or one that disappeared, becomes a ticket naming what moved and what it said before.

What is not included?

Secondary DNS and DNSSEC, which Premium DNS includes. Domain registration and renewal, which is Domain Management. Mailboxes. We do set up the records your mail provider and other services need.

Can we stop at any time?

Yes. It is monthly, and the zone is yours. If you leave, the records stay exactly where they are and our access simply ends. The first change after that is yours to make, so it is worth knowing who that will be.

Ready to stop editing DNS at the registrar?

Fifteen dollars a month per domain. The domain stays where it is, the edits are made for you within two business days, and somebody checks every morning that the records still say what they should.
